General Provisions in the New Jersey Licensing Code (effective July 1, 2008
Requirements for Various Administrative Endorsements

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR:

Covers: District-Level administrator (superintendent, assistant superintendent and director)

Requires:

  • Master’s degree in educational leadership, Curriculum and Instruction or leadership/management field; or Master’s degree plus post master’s (30 semester hours); or Master’s degree from a state approved program

  • 150- hour internship outside of general coursework

  • PRAXIS

  • 5 years of experience in public/nonpublic school, district or higher education settings.

PRINCIPAL ENDORSEMENT:

Covers: Administrative Officers at school-level or comparable unit within a school or district (assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, principal. assistant principal, vice principal and director)

Requires:         

  • Master’s degree in educational leadership, Curriculum and Instruction or leadership/management field; or Master’s degree plus post master’s (30 semester hours); or Master’s degree from and NCATE or TEAC approved program (including out of state approved program)

  • 300- hour internship outside of general coursework
  • PRAXIS
  • 5 years of experience under valid NJ standard certificate

SUPERVISOR:

Covers: Supervisor of Instruction or Athletic Director who do not hold a principal endorsement

Requires:

  • Master’s degree in educational leadership, Curriculum and Instruction or leadership/management field; or Master’s degree plus post master’s (30 semester hours); or Master’s degree from and NCATE or TEAC approved program (including out of state approved program)

  • Graduate level work must include the following:
    • 3 credits of general principles of staff supervision in K-12
    • 3 credits in Curriculum Development
    • 3 credits elective coursework in curriculum development
    • 3 credits elective coursework in staff supervision or curriculum
      development

  • 3 years of experience under valid NJ standard certificate

SCHOOL LEADERS LICENSURE ASSESSMENT (SLLA)

The Educational Policy and Leadership Concentration prepares students to take the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA), which is required for all students pursuing school supervisory positions (principal, supervisor, etc.).

The SLLA is a part of the ETS School Leadership Series (SLS) exams, and tests the standards-relevant knowledge of entry-level principals and administrators. Students planning to take the SLLA exam must register on-line at ETS.org.
