MPA Community Development Concentration

The Community Development concentration is designed to provide students with theoretical and applied exposure to domestic and international aspects of power, policy, advocacy, and resource allocation to address urban public administration.

Students will gain skills to be a professional administrator and policy expert in the subject of community development by using the community region of Camden, South Jersey, and Philadelphia.


Degree Requirements

The Community Development concentration will consist of core courses, specific track courses and two elective courses.  Students will complete a total of 42 credits.

Core Courses (6 Courses/18 Credits) – Required

56:834:501 Foundations in Policy Analysis
56:834:503 Law and Public Policy
56:834:515 Introduction to Public Budgeting and Finance
56:834:525 Principles of Public Management
56:834:535 Research Methods
56:834:536 Public Information Systems

Concentration Courses (5 Courses/15 Credits) – Required

56:834:541 Internship (Note: Students with no public or non-profit sector experience are encouraged to take the Internship course.)
56:834:556 International Community Development
56:834:603 Community Development Theory
56:834:604 Community Development Colloquium
56:834:608 GIS or other spatial applications course

Elective Courses (2-3 Courses/6-9 Credits)

Any graduate courses selected from Law, Business, FAS or MPA
Civic Engagement, Practicum, or Service Learning course

Research Workshop (3 Credits) – Required

56:834:675 Research Workshop (Students complete an original research project in this course.)
